2010 EVENTS
14
May 6.00 p.m. Labirynt. The turning points in Avant Garde
Painting, photography, installation, video, intermedia
Organized by: BWA Gallery, Workshops of Culture, sub-office of
Culture Center
Venue: Workshops of Culture, 5 Popiełuszki Street
The exhibition at the Workshops of Culture asks a question about the
program of the BWA Gallery, its history and the nearest future. It
will be an opportunity to see artworks from the collection, gathered
through the years confronted with the works of young artists, which
will only just appear in the gallery offer. The collection
represents various kinds of new Avan-G, e.g. conceptual art,
photomedialism, matter painting, concrete poetry as well as “The New
Savage” and performance art. Most of the authors are classic artists
of Polish contemporary art. To anyone, who would ask me whether it
is a good idea to show classic artists side by side with unknown
ones, which have just started their artistic career, I would say –
why not?
Exhibition open till 11 July 2010
Contexts of
Jan Świdziński – fragments of retrospection
(1970-2010)
Curator of the exhibition: Grzegorz Borkowski
Jan Świdziński is well known as a theorist of contextual art and
from his performance activity (as a curator as well as an artist).
He exhibits rarely. Exhibition “Contexts of Jan Świdziński” gathers
works of four decades past (among them work of this year titled
“Differences”), but it is not arranged chronologically. Past
contexts of the works are not the most important here. The
exhibition asks viewers to experience Świdziński’s work in current
context. It offers them a chance to give new meanings to the works
using contexts they like. But the past won’t be forgotten, the
exhibition will be accompanied by the display of publications,
archive materials and documents from Jan Świdziński’s activity. To
add to that discussion panel “Between contextual theory and
practice” will be held on June 5th 1pm between Kazimierz
Piotrowski, Małgorzata Butterwick and Bartosz Łukasiewicz moderated
by Grzegorz Borkowski.
Jan Świdziński (born 1923, Bydgoszcz) studied architecture in Warsaw
Institute of Technology and painting in Academy of Fine Arts in
Warsaw. 1965-70 engaged in formal logic and theory of language
structures, founded the Art Research Section of Polish Cybernetics
Association and departed further and further from painting. In the
early 70-ties begun to organize various kinds of interventions and
artistic manifestations, collaborated with many artistic groups
e.g.: NET, Permafo and The Workshop of the Film Form. 1970 published
his article Dispute about the existence of art and begun is
activity as a theorist of art. 1976 published a manifesto Art as
Contextual Art, an epitome of the concept of contextual art,
which brought him worldwide appreciation and still is one of the key
reference points for reflection on contemporary art dynamic. His
books were published in Canada and Western Europe, e.g.: Art,
Society and Self-consciousness, Art as Contextual Art;
Quotations on Contextual Art; Freedom and Limitation;
L’art et son contexte. 2009 two fundamental books by Świdziński
Art, Society and Self-consciousness and Art as Contextual
